Resort Review : Spice Tree Munnar

Updated: May 26, 2020

From Sugati Retreat we shifted to Spice Tree for our last night in #Munnar.

#SpiceTree is a sister property of Sugati and it has been there for a long time now. We had checked out their website which looked really promising. But when we actually started our journey from Sugati to Spice tree, our driver Mr. Saji pointed at a faraway mountain and some hotel like structure which was on a cliff. He said that’s spice tree. I was in a ‘Are you kidding me??’ expression, when he reassured, yes that’s where it is!

Vishnu and I were thrilled to reach there. It wasn’t an easy journey. Sugati wasn’t located at high altitude comparatively , hence the mountain lover in me got really excited. After about 40 minutes drive we reached there. We met Mr. Arun who was the manager of the property. Their lobby/ Welcome area had a nice vibe. Something that reminded me of one of the cafes in McLeodganj. It overlooked the common pool area and had mountain range in front of it. They had the similar Hibiscus based welcome drink which we sipped on while manager did our check in. We were given a personalized invite that mentioned all the activities and facilities offered at the resort.

We stayed in the base category room- Classic Room with Jacuzzi. This is how it looked like.

Rooms at Spice Tree are genuinely big ( not as big as Sugati ) , with enough natural light and my favourite – #MountainView. A balcony for two for solitude 😊

There was a considerable temperature drop when we came to Spice Tree.

Bath area too was huge with a #jacuzzi and shower cubicle.

After freshening up we had a quick lunch at their in house restaurant. They anticipated, we may like some north Indian food after 2 days of continuous Malyali meal. Hence they served us Mattar Paneer and Phulkas and some Chinese starters. But when we told them that we’d rather prefer authentic food they gladly agreed for it.

Resort did have a lot of activities which are complementary for the guests. We decided to utilize one of them. We went for their Tea Tasting Session. It was a small room with all things ‘TEA’ The person there explained us about different teas and how their taste differs way better than the person at actual TEA MUSEUM.

This is where I learnt about white tea as well.

Here are different variants that we tasted along with Pazham Pori ( Banan Fritters ) I like the savory ones whereas my husband loves the sweet ones.

On our way back from the tea room we couldn’t help but notice their Library, which according to me was out of the world! Tell me where else have you seen a library that not only has loungers overlooking mountains but also leads to pool facing mountains!

We couldn’t stop ourselves from indulging in an evening swim while watching the sun go down behind Munnar hills. Oh what a beautiful evening it was !

It didn’t just end there. We enjoyed our little romantic time in the Jacuzzi too…

We needed this time to relax and reflect. We get so caught up in our hectic schedule that we simply forget to sit back and relax. This evening helped us unwind.

Next morning we woke up super early. Grabbed a quick breakfast at their buffet and headed for Anayrangal Lake.

While we were there I asked the manager to show me the property and I was amazed to see their other room categories.

Pool Villa was the category next level to ours. It had a private pool with a deck overlooking mountains. A gorgeous living room with dining area and a large bath room with a Victorian copper bath tub.

But when I saw their Honeymoon Spa Suite I couldn’t help but be awestruck. It actually had a romantic vibe to it. This had their private spa beds and treatment area. Copper Bath and Wooden Deck that opened into the outdoor pool. This bath experience is using exotic combinations like milk & rose, tea, wine & milk as well as the mineral and herbal bath. Who wouldn’t want to stay here !

Both , the Sugati Retreat and Spice tree share same Masseuses. Service is impeccable. Similar to Sugati , they have a Yoga and Meditation room ( only smaller )

After yet another delicious lunch spread we left from Spice Tree Resort.

A very important note to the travelers. There are no restaurants close by. So its better when you eat at the in house restaurant. None of the near by resorts take walk ins as well. At Spice Tree too , you have to place an order for what you’d like to eat at least an hour prior.

Having that in mind our last meal comprised of – Avial , Kerala Gravy , Beans Thoral and Phulkas. I wish they served dosas in place of Phulkas. I must have eaten tons of papadam while I stayed here. Highlight of this meal was the fried okra salad ! highly recommended.

My overall verdict is this resort is more suitable for families and those seeking activities.

Do check out their website as well.
